It’s estimated that the organizers made hundreds of thousands of dollars.
A Gangnam club owner who made several hundreds of thousands of dollars from hosting “Swapping Parties” and orgies will stand trial. The club owner is known to have held similar parties in Yongsan before moving to Gangnam.
On April 12, Hankook Ilbo reported that on March 21, a club owner in their 40s and two employees were indicted on charges of violating laws pertaining to lewd acts, business, and food sanitation.
Since last April, the defendants are alleged to have charged people ₩100,000 KRW (about $75.70 USD) to [/krw]300000[/krw] to participate in orgies. Article 242 of the Criminal Code states that someone who mediates for another in order to commit adultery will be subject to up to three years in prison and ₩15.0 million KRW (about $11,400 USD) in fines.
According to one report, the club owner is said to have over 10K followers on his social media accounts and would find customers by uploading lewd posts. According to the report, organizers would charge ₩100,000 KRW (about $75.70 USD) for couples, ₩300,000 KRW (about $227 USD) for married couples, and ₩200,000 KRW (about $151 USD) for parties of three men and one woman.
Reports state that police raided one of the orgies last year in June. At the time, it was reported that 14 men and 12 women were caught engaging in sexual acts or watching.
It’s reported that cash, costumes, and sex dolls were also found in the location. It is estimated that in two months of operating, organizers made ₩300 million KRW (about $227,000 USD).
Clubs that host orgies and other sex parties are said to have begun appearing in Gangnam in 2009. It is reported that recently, the parties are said to also include drug use and have police on alert. Despite police efforts, reports state that the police are having trouble convicting participants as often there isn’t any evidence of prostitution or illegal filming. One lawyer explained why it is difficult to incriminate participants in court.
As the adults participated consensually, it is hard to convict them. It’s hard to pass laws to regulate sexual preferences as it directly contradicts people’s right to pursue happiness as stipulated in the Constitution.
